Unbidden and unkind the hammer falls,
it stalks you then it takes you by surprise,
lurks hidden in the cracks between the walls,
then lunges out to irrigate your eyes.
It doesn’t hear your weeping or your prayers,
it comes and goes as though you don’t exist,
it’s not impressed with burdens or with cares,
nor with the opportunities you missed.
It’s going to have its way no matter what,
to show you that you have no power here,
it comes and goes until it knows it’s got,
the last of all the things that you hold dear.
