Baulk

Picturing futures not featuring you,

never the way that I’d want it to be,

searching in vain for some secret way through,

none of these pictures look tempting to me.

Bound by life’s struggles we merged into one,

new symbiosis that won’t come apart,

once either piece of the pairing is gone,

all that’s left over is half a dead heart.

Runaway mind set on succoring fear,

lacking the wisdom required to transcend,

good possibilities all disappear,

left in a prison without my old friend.

Picturing futures not featuring you,

haunted with shame by my blasphemous acts,

searching in vain for some secret way through,

left with dead ends and unspeakable pacts.
